April 19Third Saturday Walk 10:00 am - Denise Myers 785.806.5666 c Wolf Creek Hike
Dan from Wolf
Creek sent a map with directions to the Education
Area and a PDF with the brochure. I have attempted
twice to send both. I've now compressed both and will
send each separately. If you receive this e-mail and
not the other two e-mails with attachments, I'll bring
extra copies.
If we drive to the
visitor's parking lot by the restrooms and barn, we will
be able to take whatever trail we are in the mood for
that day.
We'll meet on Saturday
April 19th at 9a.m. at the Motor Vehicle office parking
lot at 37th and Burlingame. We'll be pulling out at 9:10
so if you are running a little late and want us to wait,
call 785 806-5666. It's 71 miles.
In Leroy, there's a nursery
called Arnolds
1430 Hwy 58
S.E and
their website says
"Watch for
our neighbor's buffalo at the corner of Hwy 75 and Hwy
58! (1 mile west of the garden center, on the north side
of Hwy 58.)"
There is Luther's smokehouse and a
Jerkyusa. They might be one in the same.
April 26Bike trip Jon and Rosemary Ware 266.2144 We have scheduled a bike trip at Lawrence on April 26th. We will meet at the intersection of K-10 & U.S.59 highways. There is a parking lot on the north west corner of this intersection. This parking lot is beside the PINK movie theater; or it was pink the last time I saw it; we will travel west by northwest paralleling K-10 for about 10 miles almost to the turnpike. The trail does have a few rather steep hills, but it will be down hill on the return. As this will be a 20 mile trip, one should bring a snack and water. However, if you don't want to ride the entire route that will be ok. After we return we plan to go to a restaurant for lunch. We plan to meet at 9:30 April 26th . Hope to see a lot of you there; bring a smile and dry weather!!!! April 28 May 1Canyonland Hiking and CampoutJerry Reichenberger and Dave Dunford: 234.4667 Jerry and Chris from Wichita have reservations for camping in Chesler Park April 28 & 29, Lost Canyon April 30 and in Squaw Canyon May 1st. This area is 70 miles from Moab. Most of the trails in this area are slick rock with carins marking the trail. There are a few ups and downs and some rocks to climb over, making hiking only moderately difficult. It will be 6 miles hiking the first day and then only 2 or 3 miles the 3rd and 4th day. Also it would be easy for anyone to hike out to the cars the 3rd day if they needed to get home early The trail is a loop. This is a very scenic high desert area with lots of tall spires and colorful rock formations. Also many places to visit in Chesler Park on the second day. You can get lots of pictures on the internet. Basically easy hiking with a possibility of having to carry some water if it's dry. The maximum number of people in each group is 7, and it's necessary to camp at the site you have reserved each night. Leaving Topeka early Saturday April 26th with one overnight should get anyone there in time to begin hiking the morning of the 28th and with a long days drive you could get home either the 1st or 2nd of May. There could possibly be space for 3 or 4 people to go from Topeka. If this interests you contact Dave Dunford, 234-4667 about possibly going from Topeka or Jerry's number is 316-263-0422 if you'd like more information about the Canyonlands area.
